High school athletes will compete on the track at the Gilliam Indoor Track and Field Stadium with the opening of the Texas A&M High School Invitational on Friday.

Running preliminaries in the 400 and 200 meters will begin at 5 p.m. with four field event finals scheduled for the opening day of the two-day meet. The girls shot put, boys pole vault and boys and girls triple jump are set for at 6 p.m. Friday.

Saturday's competition will open with the two-mile at 9:30 a.m. and preliminaries in the 60 and 60 hurdles. The first field event will be the girls high jump at 10:40 a.m. All other field events and running finals will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Athletes must currently be enrolled in high school to compete. Because of multisports commitments, a limited number of small-school area track standouts are set to compete.

Brenham will send a team of runners. Matthew Spahn and Will Chavonec will be in the mile run, and the Cubs' Jacob Deramus, Ryan Gaskamp, John Vierus and Nathaniel Taylor will run the 3,200 relay. Taylor took second in the 800 at the Class 4A Region III meet last spring and seventh at the state meet.

Caldwell's William Deere, who took fourth in the state 200 last May, will run the 200 on Friday.

Rockdale junior Emily Brinkley will compete in the shot put. She reached regionals last season in the event.
