United beats Harvey to win District 33 championship

Through three innings Friday at the Junior Girls District 33 Championship, Bryan Harvey had done what it couldn't just two nights prior: muster any sort of production against Bryan United pitcher Ashley Conteras. Friday, Harvey scored four runs against the right-hander in the third inning to make a five-run deficit four. However, Conteras settled down on the mound and delivered at the plate as the United offense struck swiftly to turn a one-run lead into a 15-5 victory in five innings at Henderson Park.

The victory moves United into the sectional round, which will begin July 16 at Weedon Ballpark in Bryan.

Conteras tossed a no-hitter in a 10-0 United victory Wednesday. After giving up four runs in the top half of the third Friday, she went to the plate with two girls on base. Her liner to right field off of Rachel Ullman barely snuck inside the foul line, and she wound up with a two-RBI triple that seemed to get the United offense going. Desiray Sauseda followed with a RBI of her own, and the rout was on.

Ullman, Allie Browning, Paige Kopetsky and Kristen Danford all pitched for Harvey, but nobody could keep the potent United lineup in check.

Sauseda's double down the third-base line in the fourth inning scored Conteras to make the score 13-5. Meghan Carpio and Lauren Galvan each followed with RBI basehits to give United the runs it needed to end the game.

Conteras' last inning of work, the fifth, was highlighted by the defensive play of Alexis Enriques, who recorded all three outs, including a snag off a line shot hit right at her by Alyssa Vega.

Rebecca Delgado, who was the pinch-hit hero at the plate Wednesday, added an RBI single.
