Cameron girls take regional track title

The Cameron Lady Yoe won the Region IV-2A championship by 20 points at Converse Judson's Rocket Stadium Tuesday. Cameron won two relays on its way to a 90-point total. The Cameron Yoemen boys' team finished second.


Defending Class 2A girls state champion Centerville won Region III-2A in Whitehouse with 56 points.


At the Region IV-A meet at Converse Judson, Falls City won the final event, the 1,600-meter relay to overtake the Snook Lady Bluejays, winning that team crown, 891/2-82.


Region II-5A


At Baylor's Hart-Patterson Track in Waco, A&M Consoldiated's sophomore Henry Taylor ran a career-best 21.35 seconds to qualify for UIL State Track Meet in the 200 meters Tuesday.


"He hadn't really run a good curve and I said, 'You've got to be at full speed at 20 meters and finish it off,'" A&M Consolidated coach Mike Skinner said. "And it did."


Taylor finished second behind Longview's Eric Hawins, who ran 21.35, but avenged a District 12-5A loss to Copperas Cove's Will Randolph, who was third at 21.83.


In girls' competition, A&M Consolidated's Chaiss Matthews ran 5:25.46 and placed eighth in the 1,600-meter run. Karis Jochen finished 18th with a time of 5:34.53 in the race. Kaylee McCabe cleared 8 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault, placing 15th.


Region II-4A


At North Texas' Fouts Field in Denton, none of Rudder's field event competitors placed. Rudder's best shot to qualify for state, high jumper Alvin Moore, exited at 6-6. Moore had jumped 6-8 at the District 16-4A meet.


No Rudder runners qualified for the finals, although Michael Jones missed the 100-meter final by .02, running 11.04. Jones' time of 22.20 was within .08 of a making him a finalist in the 200, where he had the 10th-best prelim time.


Region IV-2A


At Converse Judson's Rocket Stadium, the Cameron girls topped second-place University City Randolph, 90-70.


The Lady Yoe's 400-meter relay team of Tonittiah Williams, Jamecia Smith, Brook Brashear and Maeson Mondrik ran to the gold medal in a time of 48.62, in from of second-place San Antonio Cole, which ran 49.79.


Martha Bustamante of Cameron won the 800 meters, beating district opponent Jesssica Mendoza of Rogers to post a time of 2:21.48. Bustamante took second in the 1,600, running 5:28.19. Her teammate, Alisia Pena, was fourth at 5:39.29.


Brashear, Williams, Kendra Jones and Mondrik finished second behind Universal City Randolph in the 800 relay. UC-Randolph ran 1:43.71 and the Lady Yoe quartet was timed at 1:44.10.


Mondrik (12.29) also placed second in the 100-meter dash behind Ebony Collins of Universal City Randolph, who ran 12.24.


The Cameron boys won two relay championships and finished second with 63 points. East Bernard won with 85.


Cameron's Billy Anderson, D.D. Westbrook, Quinn Haynes and Elmo Haynes won the 400-meter relay in time of 42.64. Quinn Haynes, Westbrook, Dylan Riola and Elmo Haynes ran 1:28.96.


Westbrook later won the 200 with a time of 21.87, where Quinn Haynes finished fourth at 22.62. Elmo Haynes placed third in the 100, clocked in 11.07.


Rhiem Petterson gave Lexington a win in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.09.


In other girls competition, Cameron's Brashear was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.48. The Lady Yoe's Kelsey Krenek was fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 5-2. Alyssa Wilkes' sixth-place 200 time was 26.64.


Brittany Jones (34-13/4) contributed to Cameron's points with a sixth-place finish in the triple jump, beating out teammate Williams (33-10), who was seventh.


Jack Rhoades of Cameron finished fifth in the 400 meters in a time of 52.56.


In Monday's 3,200, Norman Lanford for the Yoemen ran 10:24.07 for sixth place.


Region IV-A


At Converse Judson, defending state 400 meter champion Shakera Barnes had a time of 59.28 in her specialty event to win, and then joined teammates for two relay team wins to lead Snook to the regional championship.


Barnes notched four gold medals at the regional meet, but will have company at state.


Snook's sprint relay team of Miya Hoskins, Brandalyn Williams, Tia Evans and Barnes ran 50.19 to beat second-place Shiner (51.75).


That foursome teamed again for a winning 1:46.48 in the 800-meter relay, with Falls City second at 1:48.97. Williams added the 200-meter title with her time of 25.48, and it took Falls City getting the 20 points it earned for winning the 1,600-meter relay to take the regional title away from Snook. Falls City had to finish first or second to capture the team title.


Dime Box took the top two spots in the girls' 100-meter dash, sending both sprinters to state. Tori Moore ran 12.65 to win the region title and Brianna Jackson edged out Snook's Evans for second in a time of 12.80. Evans ran 12.82.


Hoskins (33-43/4) finished third in the triple jump.


Burton's Xavier Bethany won the 400 meters with a time of 50.51. Dominique Messer (51.59) from Milano took third in the race.


Bethany qualified for state in three events. His triple jump of 44-2 earned the Burton junior second place and his initial spot at the UIL State Track Meet. Michael Martinez of La Pryor won with a jump of 44-51/4. He also high jumped 6-1 to take the silver medal.


For the second straight year, Calvert's Andre Ross was disqualified in the 100-meter dash. Ross, attempting to return to state in the 200, was unable to recover from an ankle injury suffered at the area meet and finished seventh in the regional 200 final.


The Calvert boys team of Phillip Hurst, Jamarion Ramirez, Jamarcus Ashley and Ralph Ballard ran 1:35.09 for sixth place in the 800-meter relay.


Region III-3A


At Humble's Turner Stadium, Rockdale's Daniel Brooks qualified for state in three events, but fellow junior DeAndre Burns of Caldwell wrestled the gold medal from him in the 300-meter hurdles.


Brooks ran 14.25 to win the 110-meter hurdles and had a short turnaround before winning the 100 meters in 10.60. Edward Ivory of West Orange-Stark was second at 10.67.


In the 300 hurdles, Burns avenged a loss at the District 23-3A meet by running a winning time of 39.78, relegating Brooks' 40.40 time to second place. Both hurdlers advance to state.


Brooks fell short in his field event bid, long jumping 20-73/4, where Burns of Caldwell placed fifth with a jump of 21-8.


Rockdale placed fourth in the boys team race with 50 points. Caldwell was fourth with 41.


Caldwell's Shakayla Johnson won the girls 100-meter hurdles. The Hornets senior had a time of 15.41. Rockdale's Jacob Gerren took second in the 1,600, running 4:32.30 to also take a state slot.


Cailen Goss, Burns, LeDarion Jenkins and William Deere ran legs on Caldwell's bronze-medal 400-meter relay team, which ran 43.27. An all-underclassmen team of Goss, Burns, David Smith and Deere was fourth in the 800-meter relay at 1:31.53.


Deere was a state qualifier in the 200, where he ran 21.82 to take second place.


Jenkins, a senior, also had a sixth-place finish in the 400 with his time of 50.93.


Caldwell's Renae Rodriguez won her second distance medal of the meet. The freshman was third in the 1,600 with her 5:38.36 time.


Navasota was sixth in the 1,600-meter relay. The Rattlers team of Will Imhoff, Aaron Collins, Derek Byrd and Alfon Taylor ran 3:31.28.


Madisonville sophomore Lisa Nealey long jumped 16-71/4 for sixth place. Rockdale sophomore Emily Brinkley threw 34-11/2 in the shot and finished eighth.


In Monday's discus throw, defending state champion Rodney Brown of Navasota won with a throw of 172-3 on his final attempt, overtaking Le'Raven Clark of Rockdale, who won the bronze medal at state in 2010. Both will return. Clark threw 166-4, which had him in the lead until the final round.


Region II-2A


At Tarleton State's Memorial Stadium in Stephenville, Hearne's Re'Jana Ellison was second in the 100 (12.39) and the 200 (25.06) and finished third in the 400 with a time of 1:00.18. The Lady Eagle sophomore also won the long jump at 17-83/4, lifting Hearne to 32 points and sixth in the team race.


Franklin's LaShandra Eldrige won the triple jump at 37-21/4 and was sixth in the 400 (1:02.96).


Franklin's Janie Neyland (15.77) took fourth in the 100 hurdles and Leon's Cason McCune placed fifth with his shot put off 46-111/2.


Hearne's LaMarcus Cooks ran 42.32 in the boys' 300 hurdles to finish sixth and was also sixth in the triple jump at 41-53/4. Franklin's sprint relay squad of Daniel Walker, Darius Floyd, Jeremy Perez and Derek Schultz was sixth in 43.91.


Region III-A


At Palestine Wildcat Stadium, two-time defending 800-meter state champion Johnathon White won the regional championship again, but this year he's taking his brother along for the state meet. Johnathon ran 1:58.01 and Jacob had a time of 2:00.86 for second place.


The Tigers' 1,600-meter relay team of Ryan St. Clair, Jacob White, Stephen Arceneaux and Johnathon White finished fourth with a time of 3:32.90. Bremond's Alexis Kinney ran 1:03.09 for fourth place in the girls' 400.


Region III-4A


At Sam Houston State's Bowers Stadium, Will Antkowiak of Brenham ran 4:14.99 and won the 1,600-meter run Tuesday.


Byron Taylor claimed a win in the triple jump at 46-4. Nathaniel Taylor was second in the 800, posting a strong time of 1:54.55.


Brenham's 800 meter relay -- Malik Wilson, Searcy Booker, Marcus Mathis and Byron Taylor -- ran 1:29.76 for sixth place.


In Monday's 3.200-meter run, Will Antkowiak, Brenham's defending state champion, ran 9:09.07, winning the race by more than 15 seconds.


Region III-2A


At Whitehouse Wildcat Stadium, Centerville's 56 points beat Tatum by three for the team crown.


Centerville was third in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:46.02 and the Lady Tigers' 1,600 relay was fifth at 4:11.06.


Kayla Brewer's 17-11/4 was second in the long jump and her 5-2 high jump took third place. Her 12.74 100-meter time put her fifth.


Callie Padgett placed third in the 800 at 2:29.72. Lexie Wall ran the 1,600 in 5:50.78 for fifth.


Gerald Fernandez of Anderson-Shiro was third in the 300 hurdles (40.14) and long jumped 21-13/4 for sixth. Centerville's Johnny Cloud was fourth in the hurdles with a time of 40.65.


Centerville's Christy Wellman placed second in the discus, throwing 115-1. She was fifth in the shot put Monday with a throw of 36-101/4. Karlie Young of Anderson-Shiro threw 35-1 and finished eighth.
